Nothing presents a more clear, striking and succinct portrait of the times
than press photography. For the first time, the Swiss National Museum
is now offering insight into the comprehensive archives of the ‘Presse
Diffusion Lausanne’ and ‘Actualité Suisse Lausanne’ press photography
agencies which were recently incorporated into the museum’s collection.
A fascinating selection of significant events, unforgettable moments,
celebrity snaps and portraits of everyday heroes form the core of
the collection. The collection encompasses everything from carefully
planned photo reportages of everyday life in the 40s and 50s to an
impressive image-based chronicle of the second half of the 20th century
and the fast-paced digital world of the modern-day photo agency «Keystone».
The photographs on display in the exhibition «C’est la vie» are integrated into three “maisons démontables” by Jean Prouvé – serially reproducible architecture that symbolizes the awakening of the modern era and guides visitors through the early days of the photographic archive’s holdings.
